Adult party games: what makes a good one
An adult party game has one job: get a room of grown-ups doing things they would not have started themselves, without anyone feeling cornered. Most fail at the second half. This guide covers what to look for, how the main kinds compare, and how Play Dirty is built.
What separates a good one from an awkward one
- The table sets the ceiling. A night with old friends and a night with your partner need different games. A good one lets you choose how far it goes before it starts, and change that mid-game.
- Passing is normal. If saying no costs you the evening, people either leave or do things they did not want to. A small, slightly funny penalty keeps the game moving and keeps everyone in it.
- Cards fit the people. A dare written for a man and a woman is a dead card at a table of three women. The game should know who is playing and who they are into.
- It escalates. Nobody goes from small talk to a lap dance. The good ones warm the room up first.
- There is a way to stop. One word, understood by everyone, that ends the turn with no explaining.
The main kinds, compared
| Kind | Good at | Where it falls down |
|---|---|---|
| Card decks | Easy to bring out, no screens | Fixed heat level, cards do not know who is playing, the deck runs out |
| Truth or dare | Free, everyone knows the rules | You have to invent the dares, so it stalls or one person pushes it too far |
| Drinking games | Loosen a room fast | The drinking becomes the game, and drunk is not consent |
| Dice and spinner games | Simple for two | A handful of outcomes, repetitive within an hour |
| Play Dirty | Six levels, about 600 dares and 200 questions, cards matched to the players, works for two or for eight | Needs a phone, laptop or TV with a browser |
How Play Dirty plays
- Spin. The wheel picks the heat, from 1 to 6, within the range the table switched on.
- Dare or answer. The wheel deals a dare or a question at that level. Do it, tell the truth, or pass and pay a small penalty.
- Race to the finish. Every card you do moves you along a board. First to the end wins the prize the table agreed on.
The six levels are Flirty, Sexy, Horny, Slutty, Dirty and Filthy. Levels 1 and 2 are the free ones: stares, slow dances, trading clothes. From level 3 it is a properly adult game, and level 6 is opt-in, with its own briefing that everyone reads first.
Before the game each player sets their anatomy, who they are into, their pronouns, and whether they play top, bottom or vers. The game then only deals cards that fit the people at the table, in any mix of genders and orientations.
Who plays it
- Couples, as a date night at home. More on playing as two.
- Groups of friends, up to eight, with the heat kept wherever the group is comfortable.
- Adults-only parties, where a game is a useful icebreaker and clear limits matter most.
- Bachelorette and bachelor nights, usually on the lower levels.
Put it on a TV and everyone can join from their own phone: they scan a code, pick their name, take their turns and read their own cards privately. Guests install nothing and pay nothing.
Questions people ask
What is a good adult party game for a group?
One that lets the group set its own ceiling, lets anyone pass without a fuss, and deals cards that fit the people actually in the room. Play Dirty seats up to eight, has six levels of heat the table switches on or off, and only deals a dare to someone it makes sense for.
Are there adult party games you can play on your phone without an app?
Yes. Play Dirty runs in the phone's browser at playdirty.app. There is nothing to download and no account. One phone can sit on the table, or the game can go on a TV while everyone joins from their own phone by scanning a code.
What adult party games work for just two people?
Most party games need a crowd. Play Dirty has a couple mode for exactly two players, with the same wheel, board and six levels, and cards written to work between two people.
Is Play Dirty free?
Levels 1 and 2 are free forever, with no account and no card. A Hot pass opens levels 1 to 4 for 24 hours for $4.99, and a Filthy pass opens all six levels for 24 hours for $7.99. Passes are single charges and never renew.
How do you keep an adult party game from getting uncomfortable?
Agree the limits before the first turn, make passing normal, and have a way to stop. Play Dirty builds all three in: hard limits are switched off by category before the game starts, any card can be passed for a small penalty, and a safeword stops everything for everyone.
